SPECIAL REPORT

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE

For several years, a Japanese company has been working on a robotic suit that could help the old and the sabled move like an able-bodied person. With their latest version, the Hal-5, they seem to have finally done it. Comprised of robotic limbs and a backpack containing a battery and computer system, the HAL is strapped on to the body, and entirely controlled by thought. When the wearer tries to move, tiny nerve signals in the skin are detected by HAL and converted into movements. So advanced is the technology that the company is already renting the robot suits.

Pop music is the aural equivalent of the fashion industry-transient. So when John Lennon provoked the Beatles split in 1970, he could never have imagined that their albums would still be bestsellers in 2009. During those 40 years other bands gave come and gone, some selling more records than the Beatles, having more consecutive number ones, or playing live to more people, and yet no other band has ever been able to equal the Beatles. So what makes them so special? Firstly, in 1963, they were in the right place at the right time. After decades marked by war, economic depression, social and political conservatism, the world waws ready for change.
